Sleep apnea and heart problem

One Yale study shows that sleep apnea could lead to higher incidence of heart attack. This is due the fact that in obstructive sleep apnea, the upper airway narrows, or collapses, during sleep. Periods of apnea end with a brief partial arousal that may disrupt sleep hundreds of times a night. And during the apnea periods, the body's "fight or flight" mechanism is triggered decreasing the amount of oxygen to the heart.

Also, the "fight or flight" mechanism includes the production of high levels of the hormone cortisol that ultimately leads to insulin resistance and glucose intolerance. These are pre-diabetic conditions that could lead to the development of diabetes.
